“The madcap misadventure played out in Sugar Rush (2026) is based on real lifeevents. During a summer in Amsterdam, my mother and I set out for donuts and camehome hours later with… no donuts. We did, however, have a story to tell after my mother left her purse on a city tram.
In retelling this story, it is easy for me to recount the adrenaline rush, the heart-pounding anxiety, and the fierce determination I felt as I chased after trams and madedesperate phone calls. It’s harder to articulate how – amidst that adrenaline andanxiety – I also felt deeply connected to my family. Sugar Rush is a tribute to them, to Amsterdam (one of my favorite places in the world), and to the Akropolis Reed Quintet, for whom this piece is written.”
